One thought- we are learning more and more about how gluten wreaks havoc in many people. Much more than people realize. Our bodies cannot break down the gluten protein into amino acids like we can do with meat. This might be where "beer bellies" come from.
This is from Dr Peter Green in "The G Free Diet":
"Compared to meat protein, our digestive enzymes cannot digest or degrade gluten protein into its building blocks, the amino acids. It is these larger molecules that exist in all our intestines that are toxic to those that get celiac disease....We have yet to work out why gluten makes others sick in the absence of celiac disease."
So if you are making a ton of progress with your weight and you still somehow cannot get rid of the belly fat, you might want to experiment with removing wheat from your diet.
This is a really important email from someone I made very happy. What is important is not that I am great or amazing- I simply pointed this person in a certain direction and had then answered some key questions and frustrations this person had.
This person had purchased Eat For Health and had been frustrated with Dr. Fuhrmans "all in" mentality. The ideas and logic were sound as a drum, but for her, there was no way she could adhere to that diet 100%. I shared with her my reasoning behind a "watered down" version of his diet, as well as some tips I used with my own kids. I really walked her through how I personally use his approach in combination with other ideas and tools.
I am sharing this because at PEERtrainer we do a lot of work to promote Dr. Fuhrman (and others). I share emails like this mostly to show people that this stuff is real and that it can dramatically alter the way people approach food. Through the Tip Of The Day program we also help to provide a framework around which these really important ideas become manageable and not overwhelming. We work very hard to suggest combined approaches, and I think this is where our added value comes in.
Frankly, Weight Watchers has not yet understod our approach to this subject or indicate any comfort level with it. Neither does Dr. Fuhrman. He has been very frank and pointed with us that he does not like that we suggest counting calories or points in the context of his diet. Yet, at every chance we get, we sing the praises of the Weight Watchers points system and Dr. Fuhrman.
Because if you really dig in and learn both approaches and then combine them, you are going to lose a ton of weight, you are going to feel better, you are going to have more energy, you are going to look better, it is going to be easier than it ever has been.
This does not mean it is going to be easy, but if you read the following email you can see the dramatic changes that can occur in a short amount of time. I cannot tell you how cool and wonderful it is to see this stuff.

I somehow didn't see your reply to my last e-mail, but I found it today. I just want to say again, THANK YOU for PT and all of your advice and time. I can't believe you personally reply to e-mails. You are amazing.
On my own, I have started to incorporate your ideas about getting more veggies into children, but I can't tell you how much it helps to hear you say it too. My 9-year-old daughter has started drinking smoothies (spinach, banana, mango, water and ice) with me in the morning and she loves it. She talked out loud to me this morning about all of the fruits and veggies she planned on eating today.
I actually gave her Book I of Eat for Health to read (she's a very mature 9-year-old) and she is half-way through it. I can see my 4-year-old tasting the new things that
her big sister is eating, but she has a harder time liking them. And it's too early to tell yet with my 1 1/2 year old son, but he does sit on my lap and eat my salad!!!
Again, I cannot express to you enough my appreciation of your work. I have felt for a long time that I am successful in every way a person could be in life (happy marriage, great kids, great career, wonderful spiritual life) EXCEPT for my weight issues.
