The other evening I was watching The Real Housewives of New York City and one of the housewives, Luann, was participating in a workshop alongside several young teenage women. The session was about Building Self Confidence and one of the tasks was to write down everything you liked about yourself.
As I was watching it, I thought, I haven't done that in a long time. I hadn't focused on my positive qualities or strengths since I had an interview in 2001! And even then, I focused on my strengths that were specific to the position.
After I got over 3 second conversation in my head that went something like, "This is so cheesy. Why am I even thinking about doing this?", I opened up word and started writing without editing. I just wrote and wrote and wrote about everything I liked about myself.
A few from my list:
- I can follow through and I did to lose 60 pounds
- I love that I can easily identify number patterns and can understand a spreadsheet and chart quickly
- I make an effort to constantly learn and improve no matter how uncomfortable or tough it is
I felt amazing after making the list! What's interesting though is that this list has become a living thing. I keep it on a sticky on my laptop screen where it catches my eye at random times. It's like having a jolt of energy all throughout the day.
I want you to make your list. If you were always taught that bragging is unattractive or self deprecation is a virtue, do it anyway!! Just like a workout, you'll feel great afterwards.
After you do complete your list, make sure you review this article about How To Change Anything.

WOW! I have been reading your daily tips every day and have been learning so much, but today's tip to write about what I like about myself was eye-opening. I also turned on Word and start typing I like that... about myself. In the space of a few minutes I had written six pages (919 characters). We always have been told to write what we appreciate about our lives. I often forget to appreciate myself. I am a work in progress, but I had many positive things to say about myself. Every day I make it to the gym and get on the treadmill, the first thing I think is that I am just thankful that I got off the couch and out the door. The rest tends to take care of itself. Once I am off the couch and out the door, I often surprise myself with what I can do. But I really need to start appreciating me.
