We recently conducted a survey of the PEERtrainer community, and asked people a simple question. Did you gain or lose weight in 2011? The wonderful thing is about half the people who responded did!
For the people who lost weight, we then asked them what things they did differently. For the people who didn't, we asked them what their plan was for 2012. The consistency and contrast in both sets of answers was absolutely fascinating.
For the people who lost weight they overwhelmingly cited the changes to their diet. Dramatically more vegetables, less sugar, fewer fast carbs, less processed food and the elimination of gluten, dairy and other common allergens. Usually people did all these things in some combination.
The people who lost the most weight made very dramatic shifts, citing an "elimination" of a lot of the junk food. They did not cite "moderation" as the key to their success in 2011.
What The People Who Didn't Lose Weight Are Planning For 2012.
Of the people who didn't lose weight in 2011, many people stated that they plan on moving in the direction of the changes that the "losers" in 2011 did. More vegetables, work on reducing sugar, bad carbs, gluten and dairy.
One person said that their plan was the Fresh Start Cleanse and Cheat System- "doing it, not just talking about it!"
However, a vast majority are focusing their goals on exercise and discipline. This is usually expressed by a plan to "eat less and exercise more." One person even added the comment "duh, what else are you going to do??"
In general, among the people who did not lose weight in 2012, there was a common theme of needing to have more discpline, control, reduction in calories and dramatic increase in exercise.
So if you are one of those people who are thinking just in terms of exercising more and eating less, we'd really encourage you to look at the habits of the 2011 losers. That means get in the mindset of changing what you eat, and focusing less on exercise as the main path to weight loss.
Exercise is of course fantastic, and the more natural and enjoyable the better. But if you are not focused on an eating plan that in some way resembles the Cheat System or Cleanse, your odds of success, based on what we are seeing will be lower.
There are also people who are in a category where they are really struggling with sugar. What we would tell these people is that when people add the nutrient dense foods and also remove the foods that you remove on the cleanse- they get a handle on their cravings.
