How Mushrooms Help Fight Cancer

This is an excerpt from a new article we published on Dr. Joel Fuhrman's new book Super Immunity.

According to Dr. Fuhrman, mushrooms are a "newcomer" to the disease prevention discussion. He say that the science is just starting to be understood.

Mushrooms help with autoimmune diseases, but the role they play in destroying abnormal cells is fascinating.

To simply Dr. Fuhrman's argument compounds found in mushrooms help to identify damaged and abnormal cells and remove them. We did a quick search to back up this claim and found several very interesting studies. One in particular is titled "The Pharmacological Potential Of Mushrooms."

That article states that:

"The medicinal use of mushrooms has a very long tradition in the Asian countries, whereas their use in the Western hemisphere has been slightly increasing only since the last decades."

It concludes by saying:

"The spectrum of detected pharmacological activities of mushrooms is very broad.... a rapid increase in the application of mushrooms for medicinal purposes can be expected."

Dr. Fuhrman explains that, common mushrooms (the ones you get in the store) contain "lectins" which are proteins that bind only to abnormal cells, and marking them for death and making it impossible for these cells to replicate.

Dr. Fuhrman states that in "one recent study, women who ate at least 10 grams of mushrooms a day (equivalent to one small mushroom) had a 64 percent decrease in breast cancer."

Cooking Tip: These compounds exist whether the mushroom is cooked or not. An excellent way of cooking all these great foods together is the PEERtrainer Energy Soup, which people have been enjoying for several years. It contains mushrooms, onions, greens, good fat in the form of cococnut milk.

How To Ask Dr. Fuhrman A Question Directly

Most people in PEERtrainer are familiar with the basic ideas of Dr. Joel Fuhrman. We work hard to make sure that people understand his concept of "nutrient density" because it represents a different way of looking at the weight loss process.

What Is Nutrient Density And Why Is It Important?

If you are not familiar with nutrient density or are unclear what it means, the basic idea is that certain foods have dramatically higher levels of "good stuff" than other foods. When you eat a lot of the "good stuff" a primary benefit is that it makes you less hungry. Your body starts to get the nutrients it needs, and begins to stop sending your brain signals commonly known as "food cravings."

This is a powerful idea, and combined with other core ideas that we promote, has helped to literally transform the lives of thousands of people on PEERtrainer. We get emails every single day thanking us for pointing people in this direction.

Often times, people have a lot of questions once they begin to grasp the basic idea of nutrient density. It has the power to help you reduce your weight, but also put you on the path to better health. One can lose weight pretty quickly, but the health part of the equation can be harder to get back into balance. You can't expect to instantly get into better health after abusing your body for 20 years.

Usually when people are in this process, especially on the health side of the equation, they have many questions.

One resource that you may want to take advantage of, but you likely do not know about, is Dr. Fuhrmans "Ask A Doctor" online forum.

In this forum he has already answered ten thousand questions and both the questions and the results are searchable. In addition, for questions not already answered Dr. Fuhrman answers those each week and posts them.

Access to this information and access to Dr. F is ridiculously cheap- about $15 a month, and less if you buy a year membership. Even if you join for a short amount of time, you can learn a tremendous amount in a short amount of time.

We highly recommend this forum and service. The reason we are creating this blog post is that recently Habib was traveling with Dr. Fuhrman and saw him up at 5 am, going through the forum, answering questions in his forum.  Pretty amazing, even now that Fuhrman has started to become very well known through his deal with Whole Foods, though his books- he is still answering peoples' questions at 5 am.

It is a level of total commitment that we find very impressive.

One more thing- if you have ever wanted to meet Dr. Fuhrman, he is holding a "Health Getaway" this summer at Park City, Utah. The event is being mc'd by his friend Marilu Henner, who many of you remember for her role on the TV show "Taxi."  Like us, she is a strong advocate for the work Dr. Fuhrman is doing!

"I recently became a member of Dr. Fuhrman's member center. I was drawn to it because even though I thought I was following the Eat to Live method, I wasn't at the low weight that I had previously achieved. I thought maybe I needed more education on the matter and I joined up. I was right. I really didn't know enough about the method. Once I spent some time in the member center, a lot of my questions were answered and I was refocused. I especially love that I receive one new recipe per day by e-mail from Dr. Fuhrman AND that I can see what other members have to say about that recipe. That helps a lot when cooking as much as I and really what anyone has to do when you elimate most processed food."

How To Prevent Osteoporosis: PEERtrainer Interview With Dr. Joel Fuhrman

"A woman is 10 times more likely to have an osteoporosis-related fracture than being diagnosed with breast cancer or 5 times more likely than having a heart attack."

This video explains why the conventional wisdom about Osteoporosis prevention is incorrect. If you have been told to look at drugs or increase your dairy intake, you need to understand that there is a lot more to this issue.

We also have a short audio clip from a much longer PEERtrainer interview with Dr. Joel Fuhrman responding to the following question in our interview with him:

"If I don't eat dairy how am I going to get my calcium requirement? My family has a history of Osteoporosis."

Here is Dr. Fuhrman's answer to this question- it is interesting because his answer is more complex than what we commonly hear:

He mentions a new DVD on Osteoporosis in this clip, and we thought the following statistic would be of interest to our readers:

-A woman is 10 times more likely to have an osteoporosis-related fracture than being diagnosed with breast cancer or 5 times more likely than having a heart attack.

We know this is a matter of concern to many of our readers. The DVD Osteoporosis Protection for Life— was just brought to market by Dr. Fuhrman.

This is how he describes his approach:

"Osteoporosis can be combated most effectively through proper nutrition and exercise -- without medication. Osteoporosis Protection for Life is a butt-kicking, bone-building workout and nutritional educational program designed to effectively build muscle strength and bone mass. The DVD combines detailed dietary advice, supplements and special exercises that offer a significant improvement over drug-treatment for osteopenia and osteoporosis. Best of all-- it takes only a few minutes a day or fifteen minutes twice a week."

We will be sending out a link to more of the interview with Dr. Fuhrman, and please feel free to ask any questions. We also feature many of his ideas in our coaching programs, and have a very good communication channel with him and other experts in the areas of diet, fitness and health. We recently featured a leading Yoga expert in a new installment of our Point Of No Return coaching program and are continually looking to identify and engage leading voices.

We also help you put the ideas you like into practice- whether you are into calorie counting, Weight Watchers, Fat Smash Diet, Beck Diet Solution- we help you identify the things that will make you successful in your efforts.

Dr. Fuhrman Interview: Why Do We Get Hungry?

This is the second segment in our call and it goes into the simple question "why do we get hungry" and goes into the idea of "toxic hunger" where many of the common foods we eat create symptoms similar to withdrawal from drugs and alcohol.

When we start digesting our food, we start to go through this process and sometimes the only way to feel better is to eat more of the same foods.
