For those of you who have been around PEERtrainer for a while, you
have heard us talk about, reference, interview a nutritionist named
Jonny Bowden. We absolutely love Jonny because he has such an
amazing ability to teach hard to understand concepts in an easy way.
He is also a very very real kind of guy. In terms of "real life" he has been there and back. So he has an ability to
"teach not preach."
And in a way that helps to TRIGGER action. We all know how hard it
is to master the cycle of learning and then action. We constantly
preach the power of self-forgiveness, and we understand that getting
healthy and even SUPER healthy is a process.
And the MORE help you get and the more leadership you get the more
powerful your personal process of amazing change is going to be!
One of the most powerful things he has done has been to show the limitations of portion control. In his view (and ours) there are foods to focus on, and foods to totally avoid- not just eat less of!
In this video, Jonny explains a little about himself- his multiple NY Times Best selling books, his appearances on Dr Oz- and most importantly his list of postive trigger foods that can get you back on track.
Watch this video and see if this helps to trigger a cascade of positive eating action!
And once this response is triggered, it sets in process a POSITIVE chain of events. And the power of this positive chain can only happen when you go beyond portion control.

-Jackie and the PEERtrainer Team
PPS: Jonny is a friend and partner of ours. We get compensation for promoting his products, and he gets compensated for promoting ours. We have known him and his team for years, and they are part of the extended PEERtrainer family. We especially love that Jonny is getting out there in a big way. He recently made his first appearance on the Dr Oz show, and we say this because he has been appearing on PEERtrainer for 5 years! We love helping to promote our great friends.
We might want to start a series on this, but in this article Clinical Nutrition Writer Brian Rigby shows the scientific proof of why "eat more often to lose weight" is terrible advice for people looking to lose weight:
A simple google search on the term "how often should I eat" reveals articles that tell you to "eat more often to lose more weight."
Brian explains why this is bad advice and why eating less frequently helps to maximize fat burning:
"Ultimately, you want to balance the release of insulin and glucagon.
For athletes, since they work out frequently and for extended periods of
time, glucagon ends up being released in large amounts to help
stabilize blood sugar--for them, a slow trickle of insulin is offset by
their activities.
For those looking to lose weight or maintain weight, and who do not
exercise frequently and for long periods of time, they need to balance
their insulin-releasing moments (after meals) with glucagon-releasing
ones (the delays between eating). If these populations ate frequently,
glucagon release would be suppressed because they would never enter a
situation where glucagon is necessary, and as a result, any fat stored
would never have a good opportunity to be released, eventually leading
to weight gain and increased fat mass."
2 Quick things I wanted to pull out for you. First is Brian's
explanation about why you want to eat AFTER a workout,
especially those of you doing shakes.
"If you exercise in the morning, I would recommend having the majority of
your shake POST-exercise as it is designed to really keep you full,
which is achieved in part by how it slows down the emptying of your
stomach (with fiber and protein).
This is great for satiety and even
release of nutrients (no big insulin spikes!), but during exercise it
can also slow down your absorption of water and lead to dehydration (not
to mention causing you to potentially feel bloated, never pleasant when
exercising!)"
Secondly, Brian hones in on the key point to all of this, which is that
when the average person eats fewer, not more meals, it optimizes
a key fat burning hormone.
"For the average person trying to lose weight, they need to release
glucagon in order to burn amounts we would consider 'effective'. We're
always burning fat to some small degree, but leveraging your hormones to
burn MORE fat will increase your rate of fat loss and get you to your
goal quicker!
Through frequent, vigorous exercise, athletes engage other hormones not
covered in this article which ALSO stimulate the release of fat (in
addition to promoting the release of glucagon). In this way, athletes
end up burning a lot of fat even when they eat frequently, something
that just doesn't happen unless you exercise enough!"
This two pronged attack is what we teach in the PEERtrainer
finished the cleanse in the last week. Dana from Kansas
City had this to say (about her 14 pound loss, which is
well beyond the average range):
"My first time doing the
cleanse, easy to follow, the first few day were a little rough (sugar
withdrawal). I had my two shakes aa day, one for breakfast and one for
dinner, I would then prepare dinner for the family, and take it for
lunch the following day. After 3 days I felt great!
I was committed, and didn't get too hungry. I was surprise at how full I was with the shakes. It has made me aware of how much I eat, and what I put into my body."
Dana also listened to all the Q and A sessions, and
indicated that she was an active reader of all the
articles that we send out via email. I think it is great
to focus on the habits of people who do way better
than average. This way we can all do better!
Doreen from Hemet, California lost 3 pounds, which
is a little below average, and had this to say:
"I've been having 1-2 shakes each day, but one
for breakfast every day. And I've managed to stick pretty closely to the
cleanse. I haven't lost much weight, probably because I haven't
exercised as much as I should, but overall, I feel much better.
It definitely helped me to get started on a healthier way of eating and lifestyle change."
Doreen mentioned that lack of time, and lack of
exercise was limited her scale results, but what is
interesting is that she is definitely On Track to
better results. And she is feeling better. Which is
great, no?
Lots of ways to define success, and I will call this
a win for sure.
Rachel from Akron Ohio lost 10 and here was what
she had to say:
"I did great! It was pretty easy to follow.
Lost 10 lbs so far! The support from the cleanse team was great! They
were always quick to answer my questions! Helped me get on track after 1 yr of "eating for 2"
Rachel has been communicating with us via Facebook,
and she has a big goal ahead of her. We will
be monitoring her progress for sure!
The final survey to share was from someone who
did not leave their name, but who lost 7:
"I
was so motivated and so determined and so ready for a diet/lifestyle
change that I stuck to it *perfectly*. The experience was
extraordinary! It was indeed life-changing, eye-opening, enlightening
and amazing....
New to shakes... other than how surprisingly
sweet they are, they are quite tasty. I put LOADS of spinach, kale,
swiss chard, fresh herbs (parsley is especially good) in 'em to bulk 'em
up and turn them a beautiful shade of green! Fresh blueberries make
them totally yummy! And cinnamon, too!
It helped me progress... in ways I never
imagined. I thought I ate healthfully before but this is a whole new
level! I am ecstatic to move forward with this whole new life-diet
style.... I feel like a new woman! ROAR!
I LOVED what you said in call 3 regarding
changing the definition of who you are. I never thought I could be that
vibrantly beautiful, clear-skinned, skinny girl but I can! Amazing!
So... just keep reinforcing that ANYone can do this and anyone can be
their ideal weight!
THANK you. You've changed my life. For the
first time EVER my skin is clear. That's a miracle in and of itself.
I've been just 15 pounds from my ideal weight for 20 years now and just
accepted that as the norm because I thought I could never lose the
weight, and finally I KNOW I can drop every single pound. This has put a
fire in my soul to live my best life on every level! What an amazing
experience. I am blown away by how empowered I feel. I had some
consternation going into this, I was scared to change... I was worried I
wouldn't have the will, the determination to do it but... with the
online support, the calls, and my desire to finally commit to change, to
MYSELF, I did it! and it's the greatest feeling in the world. I feel
like I've overcome internal obstacles that have been weighing me down
for years, and now I've finally demolished them by finishing this
cleanse! What a huge feeling of accomplishment, what a sensational
feeling of empowerment and inner strength. A million times over, thank
you. THANK YOU!! WOOHOOO!! "
