How To Slow Digestion, Making You Feel Fuller And More Nourished
Rene asked us a question recently, she said she had been "enjoying and benefiting from PEERtrainer over the last year" and has been using the shakes and the kits that we have been providing as part of our overall Cleanse effort.
She mentioned that she had stomach issues prior, and really felt a lot better. And she wanted to know why the GI Kit in particular worked.
Here is Brian's answer:
"The GI Support Kit offered in conjunction with the Cleanse is a great addition. While we don't typically think of the gut as being the most important of organs, deferring to others like the kidneys and liver, the fact of the matter is that the gut has a huge role to play not just in our digestive comfort but our health as a whole.
The gut can influence a number of aspects of our health. People with poor gut function often have small 'cracks' in their small intestine that let larger, less digested food particles into our blood.
Our body is not prepared to deal with undigested food in the blood and so it gets rid of it the same way it gets rid of any invader: launching an immune attack. Inflammation results, and over time systemic inflammation grows and begins to affect the rest of our body as well, from the joints to the blood vessels and heart.
Even our gut bacteria help determine how our body reacts to stress, inflammation, and disease. Depending on whether we've cultivated good, healthy gut bacteria or bad gut bacteria, we can either balance our immune system to react well to any threat or tip the balance towards either an over-active immune system or systemic inflammation.
This is where the GI Support Pack comes in. The GI Support Pack is formed of three supplements: Bio-Gest, Bacillus Coagulans, and Berberine.
Bio-Gest is a digestive enzyme supplement. All of the food we eat is broken down by enzymes into simple units, whether they be simple sugar like glucose (monosaccharides), amino acids from proteins, or free fatty acids.
The better we can break food down, the less likely it is to enter the blood undigested if there are any cracks in your tubing. Furthermore, even if you have no leaks, the better you digest it the more nutrients you can ultimately obtain.
The Bacillus Coagulans is a probiotic and will help your gut support a healthy bacterial population. Our gut will always have bacteria, and whether it is good or bad is up to you. If your diet consists of simple, fiber-poor carbohydrates and fatty meats, then the wrong type of bacteria will end up propogating. A healthy and fiber-rich diet, and probiotics like Bacillus Coagulans, help push the balance back towards maintaining a healthy population.
Berberine is often the supplement which gets the most questions. Unlike digestive enzymes and probiotics, which are beginning to become fairly common supplements, berberine is still relatively unknown. However, berberine could be one of the most important of the trio! Berberine has two primary actions which are beneficial for the gut.
First, some research suggests that Berberine can slow down the perstaltic waves in the small intestine--this means that food is moved more slowly through it. Slower transit in the small intestine means more nutrient ingestion and a longer period of "fullness".
Second, berberine is relatively poorly absorbed compared to other phytochemicals which allows it to act topically on the small and large intestine. Berberine is a potent anti-inflammatory, and by acting topically it can significantly improve inflammation in the small intestine and colon. As with inflammation anywhere in the body, an inflamed digestive system is less effective than a healthy one!
In summary, the combination of the GI Support Pack helps your body digest food better, support a healthy gut flora, and reduces local inflammation in the gut. Together, they help your digestive system return to a normal, healthy state!
