Why Paleo Might NOT Be That Great For Weight Loss (Part 3 In A Series)

We always try and cut through the hype and get to the root of
anything. The new Paleo craze is the flavor of the month, and
we have Brian Rigby get to the roots of Paleo and separate fact
from fiction for you. Here is part 3 of the series:

Myth #3:The Paleo Diet Is Great for Athletes and Weight Loss

This comes with an addendum: the Paleo Diet can potentially be fine for athletes, assuming they make some changes such as increasing the amount of carbohydrates they eat. This is not the usual case made, however. Rather, the regular old high meat and veggie Paleo diet is advertised as having wonderful effects for physical fitness.

The truth is most athletes will suffer some form of performance inhibition due to the very low content of carbohydrates in most Paleolites diets. Without these carbohydrates, ability to do high-intensity work is limited and proteolysis (breakdown of muscle tissue) is dramatically increased as the body attempts to create its own carbohydrates to make up for the ones it’s not getting from the diet.

A commonly extolled virtue of the Paleo Diet is that it will increase performance through reduction in weight. Over a short period of time, a low-carbohydrate diet does appear to increase weight loss, but it is likely that much of this is water weight as the body sheds its glycogen stores (stored carbs which are very important for performance). As for a long-term solution for weight loss, the results are less promising.

Comparing the Mediterranean diet, a low-carb Paleoesque diet, and a low-fat diet, all had leveled out after about a year. The low-carb diet ostensibly weighed less by a few pounds, but given the context it is highly likely the difference in weight was accountable to water, not fat.

Another study analyzed different diets and found that carbohydrate and fat content was not responsible for effects on weight loss, which could be solely attributed to the amount of protein in the diet. Any diet can be high in protein, so this is not a claim to fame for Paleo.

Without any increased ability to lose unwanted body fat, and with a significant reduction in the ability to perform carbohydrate-driven high-intensity work, what other advantage might the Paleo Diet give? Many claim that the Paleo Diet increases your ability to burn fat. As with so many of the other myths, this one is half true as well. A low-carb diet does increase the amount of fat you burn, but not because your body gets particularly good at it, but because there simply are no carbohydrates to burn!

If you have a gas/electric hybrid car, but never fill it with gas (opting to plug in instead), you can give the artificial appearance that it runs off electricity better because little to no gas is being used. However, the reason is limitation, not adaptation. Fill that car with gas again, and the amount of electricity it uses to run will once again drop to the expected amount.

To cap this off, the athletes who pursue a high-protein, high-fat, low-carb diet wind up improving less than athletes on a diet which includes carbohydrates, and by a significant margin. The Paleo Diet, as it is often consumed, has no real benefit for performance, and in the long-term may be detrimental.

Did Our Ancestors Actually Eat The Paleo Diet?

If you’ve had the good fortune to travel around the world, you know that people eat different things everywhere. There is a very reasonable explanation for this: what is available here may not be there, and vice-versa.

The Paleo Diet seems to have missed this note, however, because they would have everyone eat like a Northern European.

Northern Europeans certainly ate more meat and less carbohydrates than we typically do today because they were constrained by seasons. When snow falls, plants die back and become difficult to cultivate for food. Animals, however, stay very much alive, even if they migrate. For this reason alone, animals were a large part of the Northern European’s diet.

What about ancestral people living on the equator, though, where there is typically at least fruit available for much, if not all, of the year, and where plants never die back? Meat was still undoubtedly a part of all our Paleolithic ancestors’ diets, but it’s also very likely that those of us whose ancestors came from warmer regions of the globe ate significant amounts of plants and carbohydrates as well.

Were Our Ancestors’ Diets Really That Healthy?

A very large assumption about the Paleo Diet is that it is a healthy diet. The reasoning may go a few ways: ancestral wisdom, evolutionary adaptation, or just plain old being in tune with nature. What all of these arguments lack is necessity. Our ancestors had far fewer choices diet-wise than we do today. It is quite likely a large part of their diet was dictated by what was available. Northern Europeans didn’t eat a lot of meat because it was good for them, they ate a lot of meat because it was available.

Evolutionary adaptation is a particularly interesting tact, because adaptation doesn’t always mean longer, healthier lives—sometimes it just means better odds of passing on genes. This sideways motion of evolution actually creates an argument against the Northern European Paleo Diet, particularly for the very individuals who are supposedly most adapted to it!

Are You A Good Person Who Has Lost Total Control With Food?

We are doing a lot of new work with a couple MD's who are

experts at how the brain works and how the subconscious mind

works.

One theme that is clear to us is this- the brain and the stomach

are deeply connected. And the brain, for many of us, is the

gatekeeper to the stomach.

You might be summoning all the willpower in the world, but

if the brain wants to do something, it is going to do it.

Even the best of us lose total control, more often than we'd like.

The question then becomes- what is the best way to re-program

the gatekeeper? The good news here is that there are ways to

reprogram, bribe and cut deals with the gatekeeper/brain.

Simple tricks like writing down your daily goals on a notecard

work well. This tells your brain, "hey, we made a DEAL." And the

gatekeeper sometimes says "ok, I will honor that deal."

Other times it is not so simple. The reasons that the brain takes

over are varied. Sometimes this is rooted in traumatic events

in our past that we are struggling to deal with. Oftentimes these

reactions get clumped into something that we all call "issues

with food."

hand in their battle with their emotions- and the gatekeeper

of their responses to stimulus. This is extremely common and

can happen to very good people.

Good people who often feel bad about how they are reacting.

How To Overcome Fear By Employing "The Better Deal" (A New Brain Trick!)

One of the main reasons that we don't change or make a

change is that there is some level of fear associated with it.

We might fear the unknown, we might fear the reaction of

others. Might be something else. But one thing that our

This Is Now A Top 10 Cause Of Death In The US

According to a recent study at Harvard University --

Omega-3 deficiency is officially one of the top 10 causes

of death in America .

This is a big deal, and why we are laser focused on the

issue of fish oil QUALITY and DOSAGE. The vast

majority of you are not getting the right quality and

dosage of Omega-3's. Here is a note from Dr. Steven

Sisskind, who I know well, and who is one of the sweetest

doctors I know.

"For all the talk about fish oil being the "cure all" of our time, I find it ironic that 95% of fish oil being sold and consumed is being delivered in a form that is not ideally absorbed by the body.

And I don't say that lightly.

The problem comes from the way fish oil is processed.

In ancient times, fish oil was a staple. It had a long tradition and everyone understood its nourishing and energizing effects.

Even soldiers in the Roman army were given a ration of fish oil to support their strength, stamina and clarity of mind.

But back then, fish oil was made by hand and was usually fermented. This allowed for the fish oil to be transported and eliminated the danger of it spoiling.

Today, the process is much different and not nearly as effective.

Because almost all of the fish we eat contains heavy metals like mercury, fish oil must be decontaminated using a method called "molecular distillation." Of course, making sure your fish oil is free from heavy metals and other toxins is critical, but the way they take out the toxins creates a new problem.

When found in nature, omega-3 fatty acids are in their natural triglyceride form (TG). However, in order to to purify the oil it is necessary to add ethanol (an industrial alcohol) to form a synthetic substrate.

In a vacuum, the mix is then distilled and the result is a concentrated omega-3 ethyl ester (EE) solution. Chemically, this new form replaces the glycerol backbone of the oil with ethanol.

The benefit is a pure fish oil, and the ability to concentrate the healthy omega-3's like DHA and EPA. This is why almost all of the "highly concentrated" fish oils are in the EE form.

However, research is now showing that although this form of fish oil can yield higher concentrations of omega-3s, there are some absorbability issues.

The EE Form of Fish Oil Is Not As Easily Absorbed

According to multiple published studies the EE version was up to 50% less absorbable¹ than the triglyceride form, and almost 300% less absorbable² than the triglyceride form if not taken with a high fat meal.

So if you are going to take the EE form, make sure to consume it with a high fat meal at the very least.

What most people don't know is that manufacturers can in fact convert the omega-3 concentrated EE form back into the healthy triglyceride form.

But manufacturers do NOT do it because the costs are significantly higher.

So instead, they sell you "powerful" fish oil that you have a hard time absorbing. Even worse, very few (if any) manufacturers of the EE form indicate that it is EE on the bottle.

How to Tell if Your Concentrated Fish Oil is EE or TG

This is a cool experiment (and fun for the kids).

1. Get some small Styrofoam cups and put them on some paper towels.
2. Take 3 of your fish pills and empty the liquid into one cup.
3. Get a certified TG form bottle of fish oil and empty 3 of those into another cup.
4. Wait 10 minutes.
5. Come back and take a look!

If the cup has disintegrated, your pills are the EE form. If they are TG, there will still be liquid in the cup and very little if any disintegration.

Why this happens is under debate. I find it a little unsettling to watch the EE form eat into the cup... but remember we are not made of Styrofoam so it is doubtful the EE form is doing any actual damage.

It is simply not as powerful as advertised.
